Redox reactions
Also known as: oxidation-reduction reactions
What is redox reactions?
A redox reaction involves simultaneous oxidation and reduction. Oxidation: loss of electrons (or gain of oxygen / loss of hydrogen). Reduction: gain of electrons (or loss of oxygen / gain of hydrogen). The mnemonic OIL RIG: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain (of electrons). Identify redox by changes in oxidation number. A-Level Chemistry extends to half-equations and redox titrations using KMnO₄ or I₂/Na₂S₂O₃.
