Understand Cold War before you practise it

Cold War revision becomes easier when you keep chronology and tension together. The topic is not just a list of events: it is a pattern of distrust, ideological conflict, arms competition, crisis management, and changing relationships between the USA, USSR, and their allies. Strong GCSE History answers explain why an event mattered in that wider tension.

For AQA-style Cold War questions, the safest habit is to attach each event to a cause, consequence, or change in relations. The Berlin Blockade, NATO, the Warsaw Pact, the arms race, the Hungarian Uprising, the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, detente, and later renewed tension are useful only when they are placed into an argument.

Turn chronology into causation

Prompt: Explain one reason why tension increased during the Berlin Blockade. Step 1: Name the event: Stalin blockaded land routes into West Berlin in 1948. Step 2: Explain the cause of tension: the Western allies saw this as an attempt to force them out of Berlin. Step 3: Add consequence: the Berlin Airlift showed the West would resist Soviet pressure, deepening the division between East and West. The mark comes from the explanation chain, not from the date alone.

Use an event as evidence

Prompt: Write a paragraph explaining why the Cuban Missile Crisis was significant. A strong paragraph says that the crisis brought the superpowers close to nuclear conflict, then explains how this changed behaviour afterwards. The hotline and later arms-control talks mattered because both sides had seen how quickly escalation could become dangerous. The event is evidence for both intense tension and later attempts to manage that tension.

Example 3

Avoid narrative in judgement answers

Prompt: How far was the arms race the main reason for Cold War tension? Start with one paragraph on the arms race: nuclear weapons, fear, and deterrence. Then balance it with another factor, such as ideology, control of Eastern Europe, or Berlin. Finish with a judgement. A top answer does not simply retell the topic; it decides how far the arms race explains the tension compared with other causes.
