Topic explanation
Urban issues and challenges questions test more than city definitions. You need to explain why cities grow, how opportunities and problems appear together, and how planners try to make urban areas more sustainable. A strong GCSE answer keeps the social, economic, and environmental layers visible.
For AQA-style urban questions, case-study control matters. In a major city in a newly emerging economy or low-income country, you may need to explain migration, informal housing, jobs, transport, sanitation, pollution, and inequality. In a UK city, you may need to explain regeneration, deprivation, transport, waste, and green space. The safest answers use one named place and connect details to a clear issue.
Do not revise this topic as a list of city facts. Turn each fact into a cause, impact, or management point. That makes it much easier to answer command words such as explain, assess, and evaluate.
Worked examples
Example 1
Prompt: Explain one reason why a city in an NEE may grow rapidly. Step 1: Name the process: rural-to-urban migration. Step 2: Explain the pull factor: people may move for jobs, education, healthcare, or higher wages. Step 3: Link to growth: if many people move faster than housing and services can expand, the city grows quickly and informal settlements may develop. The answer is stronger when it links migration to pressure on services, not just population increase.
Example 2
Prompt: Explain how urban growth can create both opportunities and challenges. Urban growth can create formal and informal employment, better access to schools, and improved services in some areas. However, it can also increase pressure on housing, transport, water supply, sanitation, and air quality. A developed answer uses contrast: the city may offer opportunity, but uneven access means benefits are not shared equally.
Example 3
Prompt: Evaluate whether public transport is the best way to make a city more sustainable. Public transport can reduce congestion and emissions if it is affordable, reliable, and connected to where people live and work. But it may not solve housing shortages, waste, flooding, or social inequality on its own. A strong judgement says transport is important, but the best sustainable strategy usually combines transport, planning, green space, waste management, and affordable housing.
