Required practical: Investigate properties of waves (ripple tank or waves on a string)
Aim
To measure wave speed using v = fλ by finding wavelength and frequency from a wave source.
Method (step-by-step)
- Generate waves in a ripple tank; freeze strobe or video to measure λ across several crests.
- Count frequency from motor frequency or measure time for N waves.
- Repeat for different depths or tensions; calculate v each time.
Equipment
- Ripple tank or Slinky
- metre ruler
- strobe optional
Variables
- Independent: Depth of water / tension / frequency setting.
- Dependent: Wave speed (m s⁻¹).
- Control: Same method of measuring λ; same equipment
Results & analysis
Use multiple λ measurements along tank to reduce error; f from motor dial vs timed oscillations.
Graphs & interpretation
If v = fλ holds, product checks; plot f vs 1/λ may be linear depending on setup.
Common mistakes (high yield)
- Measuring λ from random points without clear crest alignment.
- Confusing frequency with wave speed.
Exam-style question prompts
- How improve measurement of wavelength?
Exam tips
- SI units m, Hz, m s⁻¹
- Transverse vs longitudinal examples
