What to know for Quadratic Equations questions
A quadratic equation contains a highest power of two. Depending on its form, you may solve it by factorising, completing the square, using the quadratic formula or reading roots from a graph.
The first decision is whether the equation is equal to zero. After that, look for an integer factor pair before moving to a more general method. A correct answer normally contains two roots, one repeated root or a clear statement that there are no real roots.
A reliable exam method
- Rearrange every term onto one side so the equation equals zero.
- Choose a method and keep signs visible on each line; if factorising, set each bracket equal to zero.
- Substitute the roots back into the original equation or check their sum and product.
