AS-Level Maths
AS-Level Maths revision
What does AS-Level Maths revision look like?
AS-Level Maths is a standalone Level 3 qualification covering Pure Maths plus a single applied component (Statistics OR Mechanics) across two papers. Each AQA, Edexcel and OCR paper is 1h 30min. AS-Level Maths is mathematically half of the linear A-Level — the same Pure topics in less depth. Revision rewards algebra speed, calculus fluency and accurate use of the applied formula sheet.
Why AS-Level still matters
Since 2015 in England, AS-Level grades no longer count toward the linear A-Level grade. But many schools still enter Year 12 students for AS as a confidence checkpoint, or schools may enter students for AS as a standalone qualification (5 UCAS points). In Wales and Northern Ireland, AS continues to feed into the full A-Level.
What's on AS-Level Maths
AQA 7356, Edexcel 8MA0, OCR H230 share a similar structure:
- Paper 1 (Pure Maths): algebra, functions, trig, exponential and log functions, calculus, vectors.
- Paper 2 (Pure + Statistics OR Pure + Mechanics): depends on board's option choice.
- Total 2 hours of written assessment; ~100 marks per paper depending on board.
- Calculator and non-calculator content within papers (varies by board).
How to revise AS-Level Maths
Focus on Pure Maths fundamentals — algebraic manipulation, calculus rules, equation solving — because these recur across A-Level if you continue. Drill timed exam-style questions, build an Error Log over your mistakes and use the awarding-body specimen papers as the gold standard for question format.
Frequently asked
- Does AS-Level Maths count toward UCAS points?
- Yes — an AS grade A is worth 20 UCAS Tariff points (in addition to the A-Level grades). Most competitive UK universities don't formally require AS results but some look at them as evidence of trajectory.
- Is AS Maths easier than A-Level Maths?
- AS covers the first-year content only — the second-year extensions (more complex calculus, advanced trig, further vectors) are not examined at AS. The content is the same standard but narrower in scope.
- Can I do AS Maths without doing A-Level Maths?
- Yes, schools can enter students for AS as a standalone qualification. The grade appears on UCAS but doesn't count toward an A-Level grade.
